2017 Summer Donations
Gaston United partners with Legacy of Grace for second year in a row
For the second year in a row, Gaston United Soccer Club has brought smiles to the faces of some soccer-loving players in far-away South Africa.
“We were thrilled to donate gear to these kids last year, but we're happy to know that we are building a tradition of giving back,” said Jonas Richardson, Gaston United Soccer Club’s executive director. “We know we have the capacity to do more in our local community--and even outside of our footprint--and this opportunity is proof of that."
Sponsored by Legacy of Grace, a foundation committed to providing education and developmental tools to young kids in the Zulu village of Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, the donated gear directly supports the Sisonke FC teams in the Zulu Village, near the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa.
Cheryl Grace, Legacy of Grace founder, who lives Stateside, runs the program. “All the young boys love the game of football and although they play in an organized league, they do not have the resources and uniforms to compete.”
Enter GUSC and the Carolina Rapids, who - for the second year in a row - joined forces to collect new and gently used gear, which included full kits, training shirts, socks, cleats and equipment.
“Club members should know that their donations will help young boys who love the game of soccer to compete; but more importantly, the discipline, leadership and fitness are the greatest life lessons that they will learn,” continued Grace. “Although half a world away, these young South African boys are no different than our [American players], so this gift is immeasurable."
