COMPETITIVE LEVEL

Challenge soccer is a mid-level youth soccer program designed to fill the competitive gap between Recreation and Classic play. Players at the Challenge level attend tryouts where their technical and tactical skills are evaluated before being placed on a team. GUSC believes and is committed to the development of players at the Challenge level so they can, if they wish; move on to the Classic level.

Teams are promoted and relegated between divisions at the conclusion of each season (Spring or Fall) based on North Carolina Youth Soccer Association (NCYSA) standards.

COACHING

The coaches are experienced and qualified individuals with USSF or NSCAA coaching licenses. They are required to attend all practices and coach the team on game day.

TRAINING

Teams train at least twice per week, some as many as four times per week. Practices are run tightly working on skills, teamwork, and strategy.

GAMES

Games are generally played on the weekends. There can be multiple games on a weekend. The games are intense and highly competitive. Playing time is guaranteed to the extent that each player must particpate at least half the season; however, player development is our main objective. Result oriented soccer becomes progressively more important starting at U13. Teams will participate in tournaments. This could involve traveling to another city or state with overnight stays in a hotel, eating out, and usually at least three soccer games in one weekend.

STATE / KEPNER CUP

At U13 and older, teams will be eligible to start competing in State and Kepner Cup tournaments.

TRAVEL

Games and practices are held at venues throughout North Carolina against teams in the same division.

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT

Challenge soccer is a is our mid-level program, presenting a higher commitment for those than recreation. There are generally three types of fees for Challenge - club fees, team fees and uniform package. Club fees cover items such as trainers, fields, player insurance, while team fees can cover team tournament fees, referee fees and items of that nature. Financial assistance is available for those who apply and qualify.
