Frequently Asked Questions - Youth Academy

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RECREATION AND YOUTH ACADEMY?

The Youth Academy program is designed as the next level for a player who is ready to graduate from Recreation to a more progressive training and playing program. The GUSC Youth Academy is a center of training excellence where players are trained twice weekly by professionally licensed staff members. They are grouped by ability level and their progress is monitored through technical evaluations. They play games against other Club Academy programs. The Youth Academy is a bridge between Recreation and the more competitive Challenge and Classic programs.

WHAT IS THE TRAINING SCHEDULE?

The Youth Academy will practice two times a week, Mondays and Wednesdays. For the fall season, training begins in early August and ends in late November. For the spring season, training begins in late January and ends in late May.

WHAT IS THE GAME SCHEDULE

Youth Academy games are on Saturdays, typically between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The Director will attempt to schedule the majority of games in the Gastonia area. The Youth Academy program will occassionally schedule games against participating clubs in the surrounding areas that may require an hour or more of travel time.

DOES THE YOUTH ACADEMY PLAY IN TOURNAMENTS?

Yes, we will try to attend a season ending tournament in both the fall and spring. The tournaments will be local and not require hotel stay.

WHAT IS THE COST TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GUSC YOUTH ACADEMY?

For the 2017-18 season, the total cost is roughly $669. This is broken down into 2 categories:

  • $595 Club Dues - this covers coaching, fields, insurance, administration, referees and tournaments
  • $74 Uniform Package - 2 jerseys, 1 short, 1 training shirt, 1 pair of socks
ARE PLAYERS ALLOWED TO PLAY IN RECREATION, CHALLENGE OR CLASSIC IN THE SAME SEASON?

No. The Youth Academy program is designed to remove the win-at-all-cost mentality associated with youth soccer. Academy games will be played without published or recorded scoring and playing time is guaranteed for all players who attend training on a regular basis and maintain a great attitude. Therefore, Youth Academy players cannot participate in other leagues as we feel that would be contrary to the Youth Academy philosophy.
